Dog Warden Information

Wayne County Humane Society is no longer serving as the county “dog warden” or shelter. These duties (enforcement of dog related laws) will now be handled by the Sheriffs Office.

The Wayne County Dog Warden is Deputy Adam Chellis.

Deputy Chellis is a sheriff's deputy and can be contacted thru the Sheriff’s Office at 330-287-5701. If you simply wish to leave a voicemail message for Deputy Chellis you may do so at 330-287-5767

Dog Laws You should know.
Confinement of Dogs- O.R.C. 955.22 (Running at Large)
The owner or keeper of every dog shall at all times keep such dog either confined upon the premises of the owner or under reasonable control of some person, except when lawfully engaged in hunting and accompanied by an owner or handler.

Registration of Dogs- O.R.C. 955.01

Every person who owns, keeps or harbors a dog more than three months of age or older shall have a registration tag (license) and the tag must be worn by the dog. Registration can be purchased at the Wayne County Auditor’s Office. Dog license's are sold year around and renewal's take place from Dec 1st to January 31st.

If your dog has been impounded.

The houses all dogs impounded by the County Dog Warden to claim your dog please call 330-287-5767. When claiming your dog you will be required to show your dog’s current dog license or purchase one in addition to paying redemption fees.

The Dog Warden does not handle calls involving cats or other domestic or wild animals. For wildlife such as coyotes, raccoons, skunks, possums, snakes, and similar animals, you should contact the Ohio Department Natural Resources
